When is a pilot car required?

Trucks over 17 feet high and 16 feet wide; or 75 feet long require a pilot car.

One Pilot Car

  1. Any vehicle with a single kingpin combination between 75 feet and 100 feet.
  2. Any vehicle combination of truck, tractor, and jeep/semi-trailers coupled together (multi-kingpin) exceeding 120 feet.
  3. Any vehicle combination of truck, tractor, jeep, and semi-trailers coupled together (multi-kingpin), with articulating rear steering on the rear semi-trailer exceeding 125 feet to 135 feet.
  4. Width: Loads exceeding 12 feet to 15 feet.
  5. Height: Front pilot car with vertical measuring device on loads exceeding 17 feet.
  6. Overhang:
    1. Rear: load projection exceeds 25 feet when measured from the rear extremity of the hauling equipment.
    2. Front: when the front overhang exceeds 25 feet.
