The park also features the first segment of the San Antonio Creek Trail on the western park boundary. The San Antonio Creek Trail is designed for bicycles and pedestrians. Along the trail, there are four separate and different adult exercise stations periodically spaced between Kingsley and Orchard Streets to add variety to a healthy workout. The City is actively working on expanding the San Antonio Creek Trail so bicycles can ride from the southern to the northern City limits as outlined in the San Antonino Creek Trail Master Plan. The City is pursuing grant funding to help with the trail design and future construction. The Sunset Park segment of the San Antonio Creek Trail is connected to the park, allowing pedestrians to enter the park at seven locations, walk around, and through the trail to the various park features. The total length of the new interior and perimeter pathways, including the trail, provides over 1.25 miles of new lighted walking track, excluding the street sidewalk.
The existing Community Fruit Park is located approximately in the park’s center. As part of this project, additional fruit-bearing trees were added to the existing fruit grove, including apricots, avocados, blood oranges, limes, and pomegranates. The new trees may require a few seasons to bear significant fruit. However, several existing trees produce many edible fruits, such as avocados, cherries, figs, grapefruit, guava, lemons, and plums. The public can pick and enjoy these fruits when the park opens.
This project could not have been completed without funds from the Montclair Voter Approved Local Measure “L” Sales Tax and State partnerships to secure a Caltrans State Clean California Grant and a State Department of Parks and Recreation Grant. This park improvement project was developed with local Montclair residents and public stakeholder input and benefits all age groups by providing a safe and healthy place to play and relax with family.
