Over the years, City tree roots have caused uplifting of curbs, gutters, and sidewalks, creating tripping hazards and unsafe conditions for residents. As part of this project, several City trees will be removed and replaced. Proposed improvements include removal and replacement of damaged curb, gutter, and sidewalk; replacement of non–compliant Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) pedestrian ramps; grinding of existing asphalt concrete pavement; and new asphalt concrete pavement overlays.
At the April 20, 2017, Public Works Committee meeting, staff proposed alternative transportation improvements be considered for Orchard Street. The alternative transportation improvements consist of reducing the number of vehicle traffic lanes from two in both east and westbound directions of travel down to one lane of travel in each direction. The reduction of vehicle traffic lanes allows for construction of a new designated bicycle lane to both east– and westbound commuters. With the City of Ontario currently working on an alternative transportation route on G Street, bicycle commuters will eventually have a safe, Class 2–designated bicycle route from the City of Ontario, through the City of Montclair, to the City of Pomona and the City of Claremont.
