Where should my trash containers be placed?
Place your trash containers in the street, curbside, with the wheels touching the curb. The containers must be placed at least three feet from any obstructions, such as a vehicle, fence, lamppost, power pole, or mailbox and one foot between other automated containers. Vehicles may still be parked in the driveway or on the street as long as they are no closer than three feet from the containers. Should a vehicle block access to the containers, collection cannot be made.
What are the charges for residential trash and sewer services?
The bimonthly charges are $63.68 for trash and $57.12 for sewer for single-family residences. For multifamily residences the bimonthly charges are $76.88 per unit for trash and $57.12 per unit for sewer.
How often will I be billed for trash and sewer?
We bill every other month, on the first of the month, unless the first falls on a weekend, in which case the billing is done the following Monday. When billed, you will be billed for the previous two months of service.
I just moved to Montclair. How do I start trash service?
Please contact Monte Vista Water District at (909) 625-0035 to start water service. The District will then forward all of your information to the City so a new trash account can be created and service can be started. Information given to the District is forwarded to the City on a weekly basis.
Can I choose my own trash hauler?
No. The City of Montclair has an exclusive contract with Burrtec Waste Industries, Inc. for all residential and commercial trash collection.
Is trash collection mandatory?
Yes. The City of Montclair requires weekly trash collection service for all residential and commercial properties.
The benefits of this mandate are:
Discourages illegal dumping.
Supports the City's recycling goals by providing a controlled waste stream.
Promotes public health by ensuring weekly trash removal from all properties within the City.
Are trash, sewer, and water charges all on one bill?
No. The City of Montclair bills for trash and sewer only. Monte Vista Water District bills for water.
I'm moving out of the City of Montclair. How do I discontinue my trash and sewer service?
To discontinue service and receive a closing bill, you must contact Monte Vista Water District at (909) 624-0035. The District will forward the information to the City.
How and when can I pay my trash and sewer bill?
Payments may be made inside City Hall, Monday through Thursday from 7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. with cash, check, money order, or credit card. Payments may also be made by mail, utility drop box outside City Hall, automatic deduction from your checking account, or online with your checking account or credit card.
Are there utility payment drop boxes located at City Hall?
Yes, for your convenience we have two payment drop boxes located at City Hall, 5111 Benito Street. Payments received by 7:00 a.m. will receive same day credit. Payments for trash and sewer, business license and City insurance payments may be deposited in the drop boxes.
Walk-up drop box located next to the City Hall entrance on Benito Street.
Lobby drop box is located on the counter next to the payment windows.
Can I have my trash and sewer payment taken directly from my checking account?
Yes. To set up your direct payment, please contact Customer Service at (909) 625-9472 to request an application or click on the link below to download an application. The account holder's signature and a voided check are required to complete this process. The payment will be deducted from your checking account on the 10th day of the month unless that day falls on the weekend, in which case the account will be debited on the Monday immediately following the 10th day.
Can I pay my trash and sewer bill with my credit card?
Yes, the City accepts Visa and MasterCard as payment for all City-provided services. Credit card payments can be accepted inside City Hall or with our Online Bill Pay.
What happens if my check for payment of my trash and sewer account is returned from the bank?
A returned check fee of $20.00 will be charged for any check returned unpaid by the processing bank.
Is there a senior discount available for trash and sewer service?
Yes. If you are 65 years of age or older, just come in to City Hall and fill out a senior discount card or click on the link below for an application. Proof of age is required, the trash and sewer account must be in the applicant's name, and the applicant must reside at the service address. The senior discount is only applied to the trash charges.

The City of Montclair provides residential households with one (1) black trash container, one (1) green greenwaste container, and one (1) blue recycling container. Additional containers may be requested for an additional cost of $5.78 a month for a black trash container, $3.68 a month for a green greenwaste container, and $1.31 a month for a blue recycling container. Extra containers must be kept a minimum of six (6) months.
How do I replace a damaged trash container?
Contact Customer Service at (909) 625-9472. Damaged containers are replaced free of charge and are normally replaced within 48 hours.

Can I recycle plastic?
Yes. Assorted plastics with a number 1 through 7 in a triangle on the bottom of the container may be placed in your blue recycling container.

Food containers do not need to be rinsed out before placing them in your recycling container. If there is a good amount of food left in the container the majority of it should be disposed of before placing it in your recycling container.

If the holiday falls on a weekday, your trash will delayed one day. If the holiday falls on a weekend, your trash service will not be affected.
Why was I charged a late fee on my trash and sewer bill?
All payments not received by 6:00 p.m. on the due date will be charged 10% on any unpaid balance. Payment window hours are 7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Monday through Thursday. DO NOT MAIL YOUR PAYMENT ON THE DUE DATE. Postmarks will not be accepted as proof of timely payment.

Why was a lien placed on my property for trash and sewer services?
In January 2002, the City of Montclair passed Ordinance No. 02-815 allowing liens to be placed on properties that have past due trash and sewer bills. Once accounts become 90 days delinquent, owners are sent a notification letter via certified mail and a lien is placed on the property if the delinquency still goes unpaid. A $50 lien fee and an $8 release of lien fee is added to any lien amount before the lien is placed with the County of San Bernardino.
A trash and sewer lien was placed on my property. What do I do?
If a lien was placed on your property, payment in full can be made directly to the City of Montclair up until August of each year. In August of each year any unpaid liens will be assessed on the property taxes.
Why was my property assessed for trash and sewer services?
In August of each year, any unpaid liens on a property are placed on the property owner's tax bill. At that time, payment of the lien can only be made with your property taxes. Once full payment has been received, a Release of Lien will be filed on your behalf with the San Bernardino County Recorder's Office.
I am refinancing / selling my house and trash and sewer liens have been placed against my property. What do I do?
Ask your Mortgage Company to fax a request for a demand letter to the Lien Desk at (909) 398-1497. A demand letter will then be faxed to your Mortgage Company.
