GIS,Geographic Information Systems, are well known for their main output. Maps. However, GIS covers spatial analysis, data maintenance, database design, cartography, even three-dimensional space. Geographic Information Systems work by combining layers of data to create a map, perform some analysis or visually represent some data. A good source of general GIS knowledge can be found at www.gis.com.
The City of Montclair has been working with GIS software and applications for many years. The City originally worked with County supplied software and data to create simple maps and gain experience and knowledge about GIS. Over the years, the City has expanded its use and understanding of GIS. Recently, the City has purchased industry leading software, acquired high quality aerials and established a GIS Specialist position. All these advances are working towards the idea of a City-wide GIS or enterprise GIS. A common goal for GIS work is to incorporate many departments or divisions and to support them with applications, data and maps. The City is continuing this effort by purchasing server-side software to allow GIS data and maps to be viewed and queried on the Internet. The software will also help with data maintenance and data sharing. The City is committed to providing better services to its residents and GIS will help further that goal.
